The Mississippi Department of Employment Security announced this week the launch of e-Magnolia, a new online certificate and degree program. The announcement was made at Itawamba Community College’s Belden Center. ICC is a leader in providing online educational opportunities and training.

e-Magnolia is a partnership between MDES and the U.S. Department of Labor that will help individuals in Mississippi have access to online certificate and degree programs that are relevant to Mississippi’s workforce needs and economic conditions. e-Magnolia uses a proven technology-based learning delivery system for participants to receive rapid retraining and re-employment opportunities.

Les Range, executive director of MDES explains, “Online training is becoming a major alternative to traditional classroom training. As MDES continues its drive to technology, we’re offering this state-of-the-art, cost-effective learning opportunity to interested citizens. Mississippi was one of only four states selected by USDOL to participate in this national demonstration program.”

e-Magnolia focuses training efforts in high-growth industries and occupations identified as experiencing shortages of skilled workers. Targeted industries include, but are not limited to, health care, energy, information technology, community and social services, office and administrative support, construction and advanced manufacturing.
Open enrollment for the program begins November 9 and continues through November 30. Interested individuals 18 years of age and older must complete a self-assessment and enrollment forms and submit them to their local WIN Job Center for consideration. The program is available to individuals who are determined to be suitable for online training and who, once trained, improve their chances of getting a job or for getting a better job.

“Scholarships of up to $3,000 are available to 450-500 participants interested in this effort,” Range said. Participants are responsible for one-fifth of the total cost of their training program. Information about the e-Magnolia program is available at the WIN Job Centers throughout the state, on the MDES Web site, www.mdes.ms.gov and at www.e-magnolia.org.
